What to say when everyone keeps asking 'so what's your plan?'

Somewhere between graduation and about 25, every family gathering turns into a press conference: so what's the plan? The question lands like judgment even when it's love. Here are honest scripts for every version of where you actually are — including the version where you genuinely don't know yet.

Why the question stings

Because it compresses your whole future into small talk, and because you suspect the asker is comparing you to a cousin. Breathe: most askers aren't grading you — they don't know what else to ask a young adult. The stress comes from feeling you owe them a finished plan. You don't. You owe yourself a next step, and next steps make perfectly good answers.

The scripts (tap where you are)

Find your situation and steal the shape:

The deeper move: get a next step you believe in

Scripts fix the dinner. A step fixes the feeling.

The question only hurts when there's nothing behind the answer. A concrete next step — a quiz taken, a tour booked, a program shortlisted, an application sent — changes how the words feel in your mouth. Start with the two-minute direction quiz, then take literally one step this week toward whatever it says. Next gathering, you'll notice the difference.

If your honest answer is a trade path

Say it with your chin up — "I'm training as a dental assistant, I'll be working in a real field by [month]" is a complete, excellent answer that needs no defending. If pushback comes anyway, the parent-conversation scripts cover the harder version of this, and the four-path comparison arms you with the trade-offs. People mostly stop questioning plans that come with dates attached.
