What a dental assistant does
A dental assistant is the person who keeps a dental office running smoothly and helps patients feel at ease. Day to day, you'll work right alongside the dentist — getting the room and instruments ready, handing the dentist what they need during procedures, and keeping everything clean and sterile. You'll also take and organize x-rays, help patients understand what's happening, update their charts, and often handle front-desk tasks like scheduling and insurance.
It's hands-on, people-focused work that doesn't require years of school to get into — which is exactly why so many people in the Gladewater area start a dental career as an assistant. It's a steady, in-demand role in just about every town in East Texas.
What you'll learn
Both paths cover the core skills a dental office actually needs from day one:
- ✓ Charting — reading the tooth chart and recording conditions and treatment accurately.
- ✓ Radiology basics — how dental x-rays work and how they fit into patient care.
- ✓ Chairside assisting — setting up, passing instruments, and supporting the dentist during procedures.
- ✓ Front-office software — the practice-management tools offices use to schedule, chart, and bill.
- ✓ Infection control — sterilization and safety the way real offices run it.
