Why terminology is half the battle
Walk into any operatory and the language comes fast: "Pass me the explorer." "Chart a distal on 30." "Set up for a prophy." None of it is hard once you know it — but until you do, even simple instructions feel like a foreign language. That's why terminology is one of the first things we drill in training, and why we built a free tool anyone can use to start early, before class even begins.
What the flashcards tool is
The flashcards tool is a free, browser-based deck of the dental terms our students actually use — instruments, tooth surfaces, procedures, abbreviations. No app to install, no account required, works on your phone. Tap a card to flip it, tell it whether you knew the answer, and it does the rest.
The whole tool is designed around real life: five minutes in the school pickup line, ten on lunch break, a few cards while supper cooks. Little and often is the entire strategy.
How spaced repetition works (in plain English)
Your brain forgets on a schedule — steep at first, flatter each time you successfully recall something. Spaced repetition works with that curve instead of against it: cards you miss come back quickly, cards you know come back less and less often. So your limited study minutes get spent almost entirely on the terms you haven't locked in yet, instead of re-reading the ones you already know. It's the difference between studying a list and actually training your memory.

Build the ten-minute habit
Pick a trigger you already do daily — morning coffee, lunch, the couch after the kids are down — and attach ten minutes of cards to it. Same time, same place, phone timer on. Within a couple of weeks the vocabulary that felt overwhelming starts sounding like plain English, and class time gets easier because you're not translating in your head while trying to learn a skill with your hands.
