Let us be honest about the drive

Athens is in Henderson County, out past Tyler, and our campus is at 2800 Gilmer Rd, Suite 106, in Longview. That is somewhere around an hour and twenty minutes each way on a good day.

Three class days a week at that distance is roughly eight hours of driving before you have learned anything. Some people do things like that and are fine. Most people, honestly, burn out on it around week four — and a program you quit in week four has cost you money and time and given you nothing back. We would rather say that up front than sell you a seat you will not sit in.

Start with the schedule and the drive

PDA’s current training is in person in Longview. Compare the Mon/Wed/Fri 8:30 AM–12:30 PM or Tue/Thu 9:00 AM–3:00 PM schedules with your work and family commitments, then map the drive at the time you would actually make it.

Hands-on skills need supervised practice with instruments and equipment. A tour lets you see the room and ask what students practice before you decide whether the commute is worthwhile.

PDA’s program combines classroom material with supervised hands-on practice in Longview. Plan for the actual class days and travel rather than arranging a separate format.

A short program is not a lesser choice

Athens is a college town, and if you have grown up around one you have probably absorbed the idea that a real education takes four years. Plenty of good careers do. This one does not, and pretending otherwise would not make it truer.

Dental assisting is a hands-and-judgment job. What an office needs to see is that you can chart accurately, keep a sterile field honestly, hold a schedule together, and stay calm with a nervous patient. Those are trained skills, not degree skills. Our program runs about 12 weeks because that is roughly how long it takes to build them to a working standard — not because we cut corners off something longer.

When the campus is worth the miles

Some people should make the drive, and we are not going to talk them out of it. It is worth it when you learn by doing and know that about yourself, when you are already looking at Tyler or Longview for work, or when you want the accountability of a room with seven other people and an instructor who notices you are struggling before you say so.

Classes are capped at eight. That is the whole reason the drive can pay for itself — you are not commuting to a lecture you could have streamed. You are commuting to chair time, an instructor's attention, and equipment you cannot put in your living room.

If that is you, the schedule choice matters. Classes are daytime, in two patterns:

• Mon/Wed/Fri — 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Three mornings a week.
• Tue/Thu — 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Two longer days.

From Athens, the Tue/Thu pattern is the one that is even arguable. Two round trips a week is a commitment; three is a second job. Those two lines are the only class hours we publish. If you find any after-hours times attached to our name somewhere, that listing is out of date.

What the current program covers

In-person students learn the classroom material and use the practice-management software built for the program.
