What to do if you can't afford dental assistant school right now

Wanting this and being able to pay for it today are two different problems. The second one is usually smaller than it looks — and it is almost never solved by staring at the full tuition number.

First, the honest part

We are not going to tell you that money doesn't matter or that you should "just find a way." Some months there is no way, and pretending otherwise is how people end up signing something they regret. What we can tell you is what is actually true about the cost here, what help exists, and how to build a runway if the answer today is "not yet."

One thing we will not do is dangle a sale at you. There are no advertised discounts on the in-person tuition and no promo codes — the price on the site is the price. If your situation is unusual, say so to Amanda directly and she will tell you honestly whether anything can be done. That is a conversation, not a coupon.

Stop looking at $3,000. Look at $500.

The number that stops most people is the full tuition. But the full tuition is not what you need on day one. Here is how the in-person program is actually priced:

The two ways to pay

Pay in full: $3,000. One payment, done.
Payment plan: $3,500 total. That is $500 down to hold your seat, then the $3,000 balance in simple weekly or monthly payments — up to 12 of them. No lump sum, no surprise final bill.

So the real question is not "can I come up with $3,000 by September." It is "can I come up with $500, and then a manageable payment while I'm in class." That is a completely different math problem, and a lot of people who thought the answer was no discover the answer is actually "yes, in about six weeks." We break the plan down further in the payment plan explained, and you can model your own numbers in the free tuition planner.

Funding you apply for (not discounts we hand out)

There are real programs that pay for career training in Texas. We do not control any of them, we cannot approve you, and we will never promise you'll qualify — but people in East Texas do get approved, and it costs nothing but time to ask.

The free Funding Finder asks five quick questions and points you toward which of these are worth pursuing in your situation. It is a pointer, not an approval — nobody on our end can approve funding.

How long until you have the $500? (run your own numbers)

This is the calculation that changes people's minds. Put in what you could realistically set aside each week — not what you wish you could, what you actually could — and see how the runway looks. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere.

Estimate only, based on the numbers you typed. The $500 down and $3,000 balance are the real plan figures; your approved schedule is set when you enroll.

If the answer is "not this cohort," pick a real one

A savings plan with no date on it is a wish. A savings plan pointed at a specific start date is a budget. We have four in-person cohorts left this year, and they are real dates from our schedule — not urgency you're being sold:

Remaining 2026 in-person start dates

September 14 · September 29 · November 9 · November 17
Classes run in the daytime. We do not post exact hours online because we want you to hear the real schedule from a person before you rearrange your life around it — call or text (903) 913-6444. Every class is capped at 8 students.

If November is your date, then you have from now until November to get to $500. That is a number most people can hit. Work backward from the date, not forward from your bank balance. The free Savings Starter and our post on building your first $500 cushion walk through exactly that.

The online program is a different door, not a cheaper one

The self-paced online program is $997, starts any day, and covers the same coursework from home. It is genuinely a lower number and a lower commitment, and for some people it is the right call — especially if your schedule, not your budget, is the real obstacle.

But be clear-eyed about what it is. Online is coursework. It is not physical hands-on training on real equipment, and it will not give you the chairside repetition the in-person program is built around. If hands-on is what you need, saving toward in-person is a better use of your money than buying something that isn't the thing. Read the honest comparison in online vs. in-person training before you decide.

Costs people forget to plan for

Tuition is not the whole picture, and finding this out late is what actually derails budgets. Plan for scrubs and shoes, gas or a carpool, childcare on class days, BLS/CPR certification, and the state exam and registration fees. We do not publish dollar amounts for the third-party fees because we do not set them and they change — check tsbde.texas.gov for current exam and registration costs, and put your own real numbers into the budgeting walkthrough.

A few things we'd steer you away from

Be careful with these

High-interest borrowing to cover a down payment. If $500 requires a payday loan, the timing is wrong — take the extra weeks instead.
Any school that will not put its price in writing. Price opacity is not a discount strategy; it is a red flag. We wrote about the others in school red flags.
Waiting for a "better deal" to appear. It isn't coming — there are no advertised discounts here. What changes is your savings, not our price.

What to actually do this week

Three steps, in this order. First, run the Funding Finder — if you qualify for WIOA or veterans benefits, everything below changes and you should know that before you plan around your own money. Second, pick a start date from the four above and count the weeks. Third, call or text (903) 913-6444 and say exactly what your situation is. Amanda has had this conversation many times and she will tell you the truth about whether the timing works.

Applying is free and does not commit you to anything or to a date. It just starts the conversation with a real person who can look at your specific situation instead of a price page.

Start the conversation before you have the money.

Applying is free, commits you to nothing, and tells us how to actually help. Pick a date later.
