Small wins: the momentum method for when motivation is gone
Waiting to feel motivated is like waiting to feel like exercising — the feeling shows up AFTER you start, not before. That's not a character flaw; it's how the machinery works. Which is good news, because it means stuck seasons have a mechanical fix: small wins, banked deliberately, until the engine turns over.
Why motivation abandoned you (it didn't — it was never first)
The clean version of how drive works: action produces progress, progress produces the feeling of capability, and THAT feeling is what people call motivation. When life knocks you flat — a setback, a long stuck season, plain exhaustion — the cycle stalls, and waiting for motivation to restart it is waiting for a car to fuel itself. You restart it from the action end. Any action. Absurdly small counts; absurdly small is actually the point, because small can't be refused.
The method: bank ten wins — track them here
For one week, your only job is banking completed actions this size:
The rules that keep it working
1. Completed beats impressive. A finished 2-minute task builds more momentum than an abandoned 2-hour one. 2. Count everything. Made the bed, sent the text, walked to the mailbox — banked. The brain doesn't audit win size; it counts completions. 3. Never break the chain twice. Missing a day is a day off; missing two is a stop. Restart with the smallest win on the list.
Pointing momentum at something
Once the engine idles again — usually inside two weeks — aim it. Momentum without direction is just busyness. Pick one meaningful target and make your daily win serve it: if a career change is the target, a win is one page of the credentials map, one run of the fit quiz, one flashcard session, one tour booked. Our whole 25-minutes-a-day study method is this exact principle wearing school clothes.
A word for the truly flattened
If you're not just stuck but genuinely struggling — sleep gone, nothing tastes like anything, weeks of gray — small wins still help, but they're not a substitute for talking to someone: a doctor, a counselor, a person who loves you. Getting help IS a win, arguably the biggest on the board. This method will still be here when you're ready for it.
Aim the momentum at twelve weeks.
One small win today: see what the program actually looks like. Costs nothing.
