How to pass the infection control portion of the Texas RDA exam

Infection control is the part of the RDA exam that protects real people — your patients, your coworkers, and you. The good news: it's also the most learnable part. The concepts are concrete, they follow a logical order, and once you understand why each rule exists, the right answer usually reasons itself out. Here's how to study it.

First, know what you're studying for

To register as a dental assistant in Texas, the State Board of Dental Examiners requires coursework and an exam that covers infection control along with Texas dental jurisprudence. This post won't repeat the state's specifics, because those can change. What it will do is walk you through the infection control concepts the dental field is built on — the material any well-prepared assistant should know cold.

The mindset that answers half the questions: standard precautions

Standard precautions means one thing: treat every patient as if they could carry an infectious disease. Not because you suspect anyone — because you can't know. Bloodborne pathogens don't announce themselves, and a patient may not know their own status. So the same protections apply to every patient, every procedure, every time.

Test-taking key

When a question asks whether a protective step applies to a particular patient, the answer is almost always "yes — it applies to all patients." Any answer choice that suggests picking and choosing based on how a patient looks or what they report is describing the opposite of standard precautions.

Hand hygiene and PPE: the order matters

Hand hygiene is the single most repeated habit in infection control — before gloving, after de-gloving, any time hands are visibly soiled. Gloves are not a substitute for washing; they can have microscopic defects, and hands pick up contamination the moment gloves come off.

Personal protective equipment — gloves, mask, protective eyewear, and protective clothing — exists to block the routes germs travel: through breaks in skin, through mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth, and by splatter and aerosols. Study PPE by asking of each item, "what route does this block?" That's the understanding exam questions probe, and it's also how you'll actually work chairside. This is the concept students most often scramble on the exam — because the steps have a required order and skipping or swapping them is exactly what wrong answers do. A contaminated instrument travels a one-way path from the operatory back to sterile storage. Tap each step to see what it means and why it comes where it does.

The one that gets tested most

Sterilization is verified, not assumed. A biological indicator (a spore test) confirms the sterilizer actually killed resistant spores — run and logged on a routine schedule. If a question asks how you know instruments are sterile, the answer involves monitoring, not "because the machine ran."

Surfaces: clean, disinfect, or barrier-protect

Operatory surfaces fall into categories, and the exam wants you to match the surface to the right handling. Clinical contact surfaces (light handles, chair controls, tray) get either surface barriers that are replaced between patients, or cleaning followed by an appropriate disinfectant. Housekeeping surfaces like floors and walls are a lower risk and handled differently. The theme to carry into the exam: the more likely a surface is touched during treatment, the more rigorous its handling.

Sharps and waste: contain the hazard

Contaminated sharps go directly into a puncture-resistant, labeled sharps container — never recapped by hand using two hands, never left on a tray. Regulated (biohazard) waste is separated from ordinary trash. These questions are usually straightforward if you remember the goal: prevent an accidental needlestick or exposure. Any answer that puts a used sharp anywhere other than a proper container is wrong.

If an exposure happens

Know that offices follow a written post-exposure protocol — wash the area, report immediately, and follow the documented follow-up steps. The exam may test that you report and follow procedure rather than handle it informally.

A study plan that actually sticks

Don't cram infection control the night before — it's a chain of linked ideas, and understanding beats memorizing. Study in short daily blocks (our 25-minutes-a-day plan works well here), and quiz yourself out loud: "Why does cleaning come before sterilization? What does a spore test prove?" When you can explain the why, the multiple-choice answers stop being tricky. Then run realistic questions on the free practice exam to find your soft spots — and read what happens if you don't pass the first time so that fear stops running the show.
