Premier Dental Academy of Longview is at 2800 Gilmer Rd, Suite 106, in Longview — roughly a half-hour drive from Ore City, straight down through Gilmer Road. The in-person program runs about 12 weeks, classes are capped at eight students, and there are start dates roughly every few weeks rather than once a semester.

Why people drive in from Ore City

Ore City is a small town, and small towns have a particular problem with career training: the thing you want to learn is almost never taught within ten minutes of your house. You either drive, or you go online, or you keep doing the job you already have.

The people who make the drive to Longview usually do it for one reason — they want their hands on the equipment. You can read about seating a patient, mixing a material, or taking a radiograph all you like. Doing it, badly, in front of somebody who will correct you on the spot is a different kind of learning, and it is the part that makes your first week in a real office survivable.

The class days and hours

Classes are daytime. There are two schedules, and which one you get depends on which cohort you start with:

• Mon/Wed/Fri cohorts — 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Three mornings a week, done by lunch.
• Tue/Thu cohorts — 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Two longer days, and the rest of the week is yours.

From Ore City that difference matters more than it looks on paper. Three mornings means three round trips a week; two days means two. If you are working, the two-day schedule is often easier to negotiate with a manager. If you have school-age kids, the morning schedule usually lands better. Neither one is the harder program — the hours add up the same way.

What the drive is honestly like

We are not going to pretend a commute is free. Thirty minutes each way is an hour of your day, plus gas, on every class day. Over twelve weeks that adds up to real time and real money, and you should count it before you enroll rather than discover it in week three.

Two things make it easier than it sounds. First, you are driving into Longview in the morning and back out before or just after the afternoon crush, so you are mostly going against the worst of it. Second — and this is the part people underestimate — a class of eight means you are not sitting in a lecture hall you could have watched on video. Every drive buys you actual chair time.

Our honest advice: drive the route once, at the hour you would really be driving it, before you sign anything. Thirty minutes on a map and thirty minutes on a Tuesday morning with a coffee and a kid in the back seat are not always the same thirty minutes.

What you actually train on

The room is set up to look like a working dental office rather than a classroom, because the gap between those two things is where new assistants struggle. You work with real instruments and real equipment, and you practice the office side on software we built ourselves.

That software — we call it Practice Pro — includes an anatomical tooth chart, a six-point periodontal chart, a prescription pad with an allergy guard built in, a drag-and-drop appointment schedule, SmartDoc clinical notes, and an ADA claims and EOB workflow. If the drive will not work

Sometimes it just does not. A second-shift job, a car you do not fully trust, a family member who needs you in the mornings — these are real constraints and driving thirty minutes each way three times a week will not fix them.

The online program is the same curriculum, self-paced, and it starts whatever day you decide to start. What it is not is hands-on training — we will not tell you a screen teaches you to pass an instrument, because it does not. It is the right call when the alternative is not training at all, and plenty of people use it to get moving now and come to campus later. Here is the straight comparison if you are torn.
