Dental assistant school near Big Sandy, TX: your realistic options

Let's start with the part most schools bury: there is no dental assisting program in Big Sandy. If you live in Upshur County and you want this career, the question isn't whether you'll drive — it's how far, how often, and whether the math works for your life.

The honest answer, first

Premier Dental Academy of Longview has one campus, in Longview — 2800 Gilmer Rd, Suite 106. We don't have a Big Sandy location, a Gilmer location, or a satellite anywhere else, and we're not going to pretend otherwise to rank for your town's name. What we do have is a lot of students who make the drive in from Upshur County, because for most of East Texas, driving somewhere is simply how training happens.

What "near Big Sandy" actually looks like

Big Sandy sits roughly 24 miles west of Longview. US-80 runs straight there; TX-155 pulls you south toward Gladewater if that's your route. In practice most people are looking at a half-hour-ish drive each way, longer if you're leaving during a shift change. Check your own route before you decide — your driveway isn't the same as anyone else's.

Do the drive math yourself

The commute is the number one reason people from smaller Upshur County towns talk themselves out of training — usually without ever running the numbers. So run them. Everything below comes from what you type in; we're not filling in a single figure for you.

gas per week
gas across ~12 weeks
total miles driven

Rough fuel estimate from your own inputs only. It doesn't include wear, tires, insurance, or childcare — add those yourself before you decide.

Two things usually surprise people when they see their own number. First, it's smaller than the vague dread in their head. Second, it's not nothing — so it belongs in the budget next to tuition, not off to the side where it can ambush you in week six.

What tuition actually is

No riddles, no "call for pricing." In-person tuition is $3,000 paid in full. If a lump sum isn't realistic, the payment plan is $3,500 total — $500 down to hold your seat, then the $3,000 balance in simple weekly or monthly payments. That's the whole price list. You can model your own payment schedule in the free tuition planner.

Help paying for it — real options, no promises

Workforce Solutions East Texas (WIOA), GI Bill benefits for veterans and eligible family, and other local programs may cover part or all of training for people who qualify. We can't approve you and we won't guess at your eligibility — but the free funding finder will point you at the doors worth knocking on, and Amanda will help you find the right office to call.

The schedule question

Classes are daytime. We don't publish exact hours here because they're the thing most worth confirming person-to-person before you rearrange your life around them — call or text (903) 913-6444 and you'll get a straight answer, usually from Amanda herself.

Start dates are fixed, so you can plan a Big Sandy commute around a real calendar. The next in-person cohorts begin August 25, September 14, September 29, November 9 and November 17, 2026. All of them are on the calendar. Classes cap at eight students, which is the reason the drive tends to feel worth it — you're not watching a demonstration from four rows back.

Neighboring towns, same question

If you're in Big Sandy, you're likely weighing the same trade-off as folks a few miles either direction. We've written the honest version for them too: near Gilmer and near Gladewater. Same campus, same tuition, different drive — and if you know someone on the same road, splitting the trip is the oldest trick in East Texas.

Is the drive worth it?

That depends on numbers we won't invent for you. What a dental assistant earns varies by office, city, schedule and experience, so instead of quoting a figure we keep a page about it: what dental assistants earn in East Texas. Put your own commute cost from the calculator above next to what you find there, and next to what you're earning now. That comparison is the real answer, and it's yours to make.

One more thing worth weighing: finishing a program and registering with the State of Texas are two different steps. We issue a certificate of completion; registration requirements come from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, and you should read those straight from the source at tsbde.texas.gov.

If you're still on the fence
